From left, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist Heather Hettinger, Terry White of American-Canadian Fisheries, Inc., DNR Technician Supervisor Joe Mickevich and DNR Hatchery Technician Eric Schrouder install the Boardman River Weir on Tuesday morning in downtown Traverse City. The weir prevents spawning Chinook and coho salmon from making their way into the Boardman River system beyond the stretch in downtown Traverse City and the river’s mouth at West Grand Traverse Bay. DNR Fisheries Biologist Heather Hettinger said the James P. Price Harvest Facility, which collects salmon at the weir, won’t begin operating until possibly next week, depending on how many fish are coming into the river. “We’ll just wait until we get a decent accumulation of fish,” said Hettinger.
