STONE SOUP CELEBRATION

Merrill Lahti, 5, adds a scoop of tomatoes to the pot as Traverse City Area Public Schools Glenn Loomis Monetessori students hold their Stone Soup Celebration on Thursday. Guest readers from the community read the story, which teaches the importance of working together to create something special, to classes, who then added ingredients and a stone, or helped stir the soup as it simmered outside in a courtyard. The vegetable soup was made with ingredients, such as carrots, tomatoes, celery, green beans, onions, garlic and corn, gathered by junior high students at the Sara Hardy Farmer’s Market and provided by TLC Hydroponics. Herbs were also included from the school’s herb garden. Students were able to eat the soup the it was finished at the end of the school day.
