Carnations float in the Great Lakes Maritime Academy’s harbor in memory of sailors lost at sea following Thursday’s 47th annual Great Lakes Mariners Memorial Service at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in the Northwestern Michigan College Great Lakes Campus in Traverse City. The event, sponsored by the academy’s Student Propeller Club, Port 150, is held to honor and remember the 29 crew members lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald when it sank in a Lake Superior storm on Nov. 10, 1975, as well as all sailors lost on the Great Lakes and oceans. This year’s service included a memorial to 2014 GLMA graduate Richard J. Gray, who died in January this year while serving on the Walter J. McCarthy.
