Eighth grade students at Kalkaska Middle School compete in Friday's Pumpkin Chunkin' contest on Friday. The 117 competing students formed teams to apply what they had learned in their International Baccalaureate Forces in Motion unit to build one of three types of launching machines - trebuchet, catapault or ballista - and see who could launch a softball-sized pumpkin the farthest using what they had learned about Newton's Law, projectile motion and gravity.
