DEER SEASON OPENS
Record-Eagle/Jan-Michael Stump
A seven-point buck shot by Jim Samfilippo of Canton, his first buck, sits in a truck bed next to an eight-point shot by his uncle, Dennis Samfilippo of Mesick at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources deer check station at the DNR Traverse City Customer Service Center on Thursday, the opening day of firearm deer season in Michigan. The stations, located across the state, check the age, sex, antler dimensions, location the deer was taken and can test for diseases such as chronic wasting disease for hunters who choose to bring in their deer.
