KIDS CREEK TESTING
Record-Eagle/Jan-Michael Stump
Grand Traverse Baykeeper Heather Smith talks to fourth graders from Old Mission Peninsula School before the group takes water samples from Kids Creek along North Oak Street in downtown Traverse City on Thursday afternoon, testing for pH, conductivity and temperature. The students have partnered with The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay in a long-term study on the creek and the effects of road salt runoff. Tests will be taken from several sites along the creek, which flows into the Boardman River near its mouth in West Grand Traverse Bay, on a monthly and possibly bi-monthly during certain times. Funding for the project comes from the Dan Wolz Grant, awarded to fourth grade teacher Carolyn Mammen from the Michigan Science Teacher Association and is sponsored by the Michigan Water Environment Association in Lansing.
