HYDRANT FLUSH
Record-Eagle photo/Jan-Michael Stump
Robert Zywicki, chief water operator in the Traverse City Department of Public Services, stands under a plume of water from a fire hydrant at the corner of Union Street and Sixteenth Street as he and several other city workers attempt to flush more water through the city water system to keep the pipes thawed. Zywicki said there are about nine homes still dealing with frozen pipes, down from about 400, adding that the threat still exists because overnight sub-freezing temperatures continue to push the frost layer lower.
