A crowd watches the Traverse Area District Library burn a copy of its mortgage outside the Woodmere Branch on Thursday afternoon in celebration of paying off the 20-year operational millage of 1.1 mills, not to exceed $8.5 million, approved in 1996 that funded the construction of the main branch in Traverse City. The building was constructed in 1998 and opened in January of 1999.
