KRAITZ CABIN RESTORATION
Record-Eagle/Jan-Michael Stump
Corners of the Kraitz cabin along County Road 669 in Cleveland Township are made with dovetail joints. The cabin, being restored by volunteers with Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, dates back to around 1856, and is one of the oldest structures in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Restoration work, which has been going on for over three summers, has included a new temporary roof, the removal of a fireplace, the return of the original door and window configurations and some foundation work, all done to period standards.
