LEVELING LABYRINTH
Marty Kermeen of Labyrinths in Stone of Yorkville, Ill, hand grades the bed of a labyrinth for the Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park in Traverse City. Marty and his wife Debi Kermeen are working to ensure the entire bed of the approximately 61-foot in diameter labyrinth will have a grade between 1 percent and 2 percent, with the strings stretched from the center representing the top of the bricks they will start placing in about two weeks. "My wife said the other day I look like a little boy in a giant sandbox," said Marty Kermeen, who has been making labyrinths since 1998. "Watching us make labyrinths takes longer than watching grass grow," he said, adding he hoped to have the project completed this fall. "The goal is to be done before Mother Nature says we're done," said Kermeen.
