Molly Desmond, 5, lugs a shovel full of snow to a fort in her front yard in downtown Traverse City on Monday afternoon while she and her two sisters worked to make a fort. The trio spent most of the afternoon playing outside during the first snowday of the school year. About six inches of powdery snow blanketed most of the region Monday morning after a cold front pushed through the area. The snow was abundant, but not the perfect kind for packing. "I wish it was a little warmer so it would pack," said Julie Hearne, the girls' mother.
