CITIZENS REDISTRICTING COMMISSION
Jan Rygwelski of Northport finishes filling out her application to serve on MichiganÕs new Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission during a workshop hosted by representatives from the Michigan Department of State's office to answer questions and help interested people sign up on Tuesday at Northwestern Michigan College's Hagerty Center in Traverse City. The commission is being created following the passing of a state constitutional amendment in last November's election to draw fair and representative election districts for the Michigan Legislature and U.S. Congress. Applications for the commission will be accepted until June 1, 2020, where the selection process will narrow the group down to 13 commissioners -- four each affiliated with the Republican and Democratic parties and four that are not affiliated with any party -- who will meet to adopt a redistricting plan by Nov 1, 2021 for the 2022 elections.
