BIKES FOR TIKES

Piper Shumar, 9, picks out decals while putting together a tricycle with family members during the Bikes for Tikes Northern Michigan annual Assemble Day on Saturday at the VFW Post 2780 in Traverse City. The group has been collecting money to purchase new bicycles to be donated to Toys for Tots for 19 years, and hosting assembly parties for the past 8 years. This year the group collected over 240 bicycles.
Shumar collected about $6,000 worth of cans at Timber Ridge Resort all year to put towards her donation of over 130 bicycles for this year's event. Shumar, who has battled chronic illness, has been a cyclist since she was two, and has participated in several past Assemble Days with her family. Last year she decided to do more by collecting enough returnable cans to donate two bicycles.
