PRESCRIBED BURNS

Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Biologist Steve Griffith checks out the scene of a prescribed burn on a pine barrens in Grand Traverse County's Union Township on Thursday to encourage the regeneration of grasses in the ecosystem. The burn is one of six planned by the DNR, with four remaining in Grand Traverse and Kalkaska Counties this summer. In addition, the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will have its own prescribed burn in its Platte River District on May 6.
