EARTH DAY PLANTING
Record-Eagle/Jan-Michael Stump
Amelia Ackerson, 10, digs a hole for her and her father Tom Ackerson to plant a highbush cranberry as they and over 30 volunteers helped the Grand Traverse Conservation District plant about 1,600 native species of shrubs and other low-growing plants such as red osier dogwood, elderberry and fragrant sumac, along the power lines in Hickory Meadows preserve in Traverse City. The planting, funded by Traverse City Light and Power, was done on Earth Day to help restore native species to the corridor, which had been cut to clear space for the utility lines, and prevent invasive species from taking over.
