TRADITIONAL BOOK MAKING

Chad Pastotnik of Deep Woods Press holds an example of his work while talking about the process of traditional book making during a presentation at the Music House Museum in Acme. Pastotnik, who founded the print shop along Antrim County's Cedar River in 1992, makes the books by hand. Editions rarely exceed 100 books, and are printed on handmade paper from makers around the world before being hand sewn with linen thread in the traditional manner. "Now a days you push a button and it pops out from this plastic box next to you," he said. Books go mostly to private collectors and institutions such as the Library of Congress, University of Michigan or the Tate Modern museum in London, but can also be found at Landmark Books in Traverse City.
