A line of snowmobiles park up the hill from a snow-covered Starvation Lake, located in Kalkaska County's Blue Lake Township. Inside the nearby bar The Hideaway, a few locals discussed a new mystery set in a fictional northern Michigan town called Starvation Lake. Bryan Gruley's book is inspired by the woodsy area's snowmobile and hockey culture.
