The Small Craft Club, a collaboration between the Maritime Heritage Association and Child and Family Services, is teaching a group how to build three touring-style stand-up paddleboards over their spring break. Funding came from donors who pre-paid for the boards, and from grants from Consumers Energy, Rotary Charities and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The new program is an offshoot of the summertime SAIL (Success Always Involves Learning) Champion program, which provides a chance for at-risk youth to sail the Champion, the Maritime Heritage Association's 39-foot cutter, and receive therapy sessions while onboard.
