Sophie Swanker, 14, grabs items to fill a bag as she and fellow members of the Northshore Volleyball team help pack about 290 bags at the Father Fred Foundation for its Blessings in a Backpack program, which distributes food bags for the weekend for students from 11 Traverse City area schools living in a food insecure household. It costs about $144 to help one student for the entire school year, which is funded through donations said Father Fred Marketing Manager Donna Hogard. Students are referred to the program by school staff, and meals are designed to be healthy and easy to prepare.
