Bill Horning, of Suttons Bay, scrapes the hull of the armed sloop Welcome as it sits in dry dock in Northport. The 55-foot ship, a replica of an original built in 1774, is having work done on its electrical systems, engines and hull following a Coast Guard inspection. The Maritime Heritage Alliance, which owns the vessel, wants to receive certification to carry more than six, but fewer than 50 passengers by next summer. Its currently working on getting a six-passenger license this year.
