Spec Salmon Fishing

Tom Smith examines the salmon he just pulled from the Betsie River near the Homestead Dam on Tuesday morning. Smith, 94, is from Grand Rapids and comes up twice a week in September for the fishing. He catches three or four every time and doesn't keep the fish, often giving them away to those who help catch them. Smith stood in the river, leaning on his cane and fighting with the 25-pound fish for several minutes. "He's kind of small," Smith joked, "throw him back in."
