MEMORIAL DAY FLAGS
Record-Eagle photo/Jan-Michael Stump
Remi Helton, 5, helps other volunteers take down American Flags flying over the gravesites of military service members buried in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City. The flags are raised, weather permitting, each morning during Memorial Day weekend, and taken down each night. The work is done by volunteers, who also raise the flags on Flag Day and the Fourth of July. There were six flags, the casket flags given to the families of service members, when the tradition began in 1960. There are 738 today.
