Two poles for the Hickory Hills Ski Area are transported down Division Street on Thursday. The poles, one of which is 110 feet long, were made from laminated wood and cost $50,000. The extra long poles will eliminate the need for guy wires for the poles they will replace on the slopes. Using regular poles would have cost $17,000 but Traverse City Light & Power officials said they spent the extra money to improve skier safety. The pole replacement is part of the upgrade of the utility's west side transmission.
