Runners descend a section of Wayne Hill during the Run for Shelter 5K fundraiser for the Goodwill Inn, Saturday in Traverse City. Hundreds of runners followed the loop course that started and ended at Willow Hill Elementary School and traced through Slab Town, a series of hills on Randolph Street, and a stretch along West Grand Traverse Bay. Run for Shelter sponsor and entry fees will be given directly to the Goodwill Inn. Karl Bastian, of Greenlight Marketing, and Bill Lancaster, of Lancaster Photography, co-directed the run to benefit the local facility.

The annual senior spelling bee is scheduled for Friday, May 1 at Twin Lakes Gilbert Lodge in Long Lake Township. Seniors can sign up in teams of three or individuals to be placed on a team to participate. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers.

Mickie Novorolsky lights Meghan Hickey's candle outside the Griffin Hall of Justice Tuesday for the Light of Hope candlelight vigil in recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, National Volunteer Week and National Crime Victims' Rights Week. About 80 people attended the event, which was coordinated by the Court Appointed Special Advocates, Women's Resource Center and the Tri-County Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. There were more than 300 victims of child abuse and more than 200 reported cases of criminal sexual conduct in the five-county area in 2007, according to Aimee Sandula, a client advocate at WRC.
