Roy Challender cuts a hole in the ceiling for new electrical wiring for ceiling lights inside the Yuba School. Challender said he attended the school from 1945 to 1952, and his children attended Bible school there in the summer. Challender, a retired construction superintendent, has been volunteering on the restoration project for over two years, and calls it a labor of love. Construction on the Yuba School, along U.S. 31 between Traverse City and Elk Rapids, began in 1870, and a second classroom was added in 1901. It was closed in 1964. The Yuba Historic Society was formed in 2009 to protect the schoolhouse, which was registered as a Michigan Historic Site in 1990.
