Samels Farm : Students became the teachers last week when eighth-graders from Cherryland Middle School shared their knowledge about life on the Samels Farm with area fourth-graders. Dressed in appropriate attire, students gave guided tours of the house, garden, barn, blacksmith shop, granary and an archeological site where Indian artifacts were discovered as the Samels family worked the soil. They also demonstrated everyday chores like baking bread, making butter, using a wringer washer, flailing grain and tending to the goats.

2009 TC West Trashion Fashion Show : Traverse City West Senior High hosted the second annual Trashion fashion show Friday evening in the school commons. The fashion show featured wearable art designs created by students from 10 area high schools. The 70 outfits on display were created using a multitude of recyclable and alternative materials.

Dance Center Youth Ensemble : The Dance Center Youth Ensemble will present the full-length ballet, “Cinderella” on Saturday and Sunday at the Dennos Museum Center Milliken Auditorium. This original production features more than 50 area student members. Concerts will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday; 2 and 6 p.m. Sunday. GT Bodybuilding Championship : Mike Porter won the overall men's title and Karen Hypro earned the women's overall championship at the 29th annual Grand Traverse Bodybuilding and Figure Championships held Saturday at the Leelanau Sands Showroom in Suttons Bay. Presented by Fit For You Health Club, the competition featured 10 categories. The men's division included Men's Grand Masters (50 and older), Men's Masters (40 and older), Men's Short and Men's Tall. The women's competition featured Women's Masters (35 and older), Women's Short, Women's Tall, Women's Elite and Figure championship. The contest also featured an overall men's, women's and figure winner. There are a number of standards judging criterion which the judges must follow as dictated by the National Physique Committee. Among the elements judges must consider are muscularity, symmetry and posing.

Traverse City Christian School 'Our Miss Brooks' : Traverse City Christian School High School presented the comedy "Our Miss Brooks" Thursday and Saturday in the school auditorium. The play is based on the hit situation comedy of the same name, which stared Eve Arden as beloved high school English teacher, Connie Brooks. Proceeds from the performances support the TCCS Theatrical Department.

Street Drum Corps : Street Drum Corps performed two educational concerts that shook the walls Friday at the Dennos Museum Center Milliken Auditorium at Northwestern Michigan College. The high-adrenaline punk percussion group put on workshops for 800 area elementary, middle and high school students. The trio's sound originates from buckets, kitchenware, metal and plastic garbage cans, car tire rims and whatever is within reach, to create a blistering percussion show. Students clapped and stomped along with the group, including a few selected to go on stage and pound along with the band. The drumming trio of Justin Imamura, Nikki Grant and Chris Pounders hail from Los Angeles. Street Drum Corps has shared the stage with the likes of STOMP, No Doubt, Bad Religion, Good Charlotte, 30 Seconds to Mars and The Used. TC West's 'The Secret Garden' musical : Traverse City West Senior High Music Department presents "The Secret Garden" starting Friday through Sunday, March 22. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for general seating and $20 premier seating. Tickets may be purchased at www.tcaps.net/wsh-musical (a $2 ticket fee will apply to all tickets). For more information, call the WSH music office at 933-7570. A portion of the proceeds from this year's production will help fund the WSH Chorale Europe trip to perform at the Musica Mundi International Chorale Competition.

Folly at the Forge : The three-day Folly at the Forge brought together dozens of blacksmith novice and experts alike from around the region and as far as Canada to Black Rock Forge in Traverse City. Blacksmith artisans shared their skills with new hobbyists as Dan Nickels opened up his shop for the traditional February gathering. The Folly at the Forge featured plenty of anvil space for projects, such as creating a gas forge, along with presentations from experts in the blacksmithing arts.

2008 Festival of Trains : Kicking off Saturday, the Festival of Trains runs through New Year's Day at the Grand Traverse Heritage Center, featuring extensive displays of model trains in the Z, N, HO, S and G scales. The annual festival is presented by the Northern Michigan Railroad Club. Organizers hope to draw 10,000 visitors over the event's almost three-week run.
